Benefits of spreading mulch in your garden beds:
Mulch keeps the soil around your plants cooler on warm days and warmer on cold nights. This is especially important during rapid temperature changes.
Mulch helps control moisture evaporation from soil by slowing down the evaporation process up to 50 percent. This allows more moisture to reach and stay near your plants’ roots.
Mulch can smother weeds when installed properly. A 3-inch layer of mulch will prevent sunlight from reaching the weed seeds in the soil. This will reduce the chances of seed germination.
A mulched flower bed is more aesthetically appealing than bare soil. The mulch also helps to prevent dirt and debris from splashing onto flowers and foiliage from rainfall.
When mulch breaks down and decomposes, it provides nutrients into the soil. Thus, do not remove old mulch, add a fresh layer on top of the old layer when necessary to maintain thickness. This will allow the old mulch to continue to feed the soil while maintaining a beautiful appearance.
